Description
In 1938, the U.S. Army Air Corps issued a requirement for a twin-engine, twin-tail medium bomber, prompting North American Aviation to develop what became the B-25 Mitchell. After further refinement, the aircraft first flew in August 1940 and entered production in 1941. The B-25 gained fame in April 1942 when 16 aircraft led by Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle launched from USS Hornet to raid Tokyo. Though damage was limited, the mission had enormous strategic impact. Thousands of B-25s served worldwide, from North Africa to the Pacific. Later variants featured heavy forward armament, including the B-25G with a 75 mm cannon and the highly produced B-25J. Production ended in August 1945, cementing the B-25’s place in aviation history.
