Description
The Hawker Siddeley Harrier was a revolutionary British jet aircraft and the first operational fighter capable of vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL). Developed from the P.1127 and Kestrel prototypes, it entered RAF service as the Harrier GR.1 in 1969 after its first flight in 1967. Its defining feature was the Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan engine, mounted in the fuselage and fitted with four rotating nozzles that directed thrust for lift and forward flight, allowing it to operate without traditional runways.
The Harrier’s unique landing gear configuration, with outriggers under the wings, supported stable hovering and vertical landings. It was highly versatile, carrying a wide range of weapons including bombs, rocket pods, gun pods, and air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder.
The design attracted strong interest from the United States Marine Corps, leading to the AV-8A Harrier, produced by Hawker Siddeley Aviation and later operated by USMC squadrons such as VMA-513, VMA-542, and VMA-231. Used primarily for ground attack and close air support, the AV-8A could also operate from amphibious assault ships and short forward bases, giving it exceptional flexibility.
The Harrier family remained in service until the introduction of the Harrier II, marking a major step forward in V/STOL combat aviation.
