Description
The Macchi C.200 Saetta was Italy’s first modern monoplane fighter, developed for the Regia Aeronautica under “Programme R.” Powered by a 870 hp Fiat A.74 R.C.38 radial engine, it reached 502 km/h and was admired for agility and rugged all-metal construction. Armament was limited to two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns. Early aircraft had enclosed cockpits, later replaced by open ones preferred by pilots. Entering service in 1939, the Saetta fought over Greece, Yugoslavia, and Malta. About 1,000 were built, serving throughout the early war years.
