Description

The Airspeed A.S. 51 Horsa was one of WWII’s most successful assault gliders, developed and flown within just 10 months (1940–41). Over 3,500 were built. Of wooden, fabric-covered construction, it featured full instrumentation, a detachable tail for rapid unloading under fire, and a jettisonable tricycle undercarriage for rough landings. The Mk I version carried 25 fully equipped troops plus pilot and co-pilot. The Mk II, with a side-hinged nose, was designed for heavy cargo like vehicles and howitzers. Gliders were towed into battle by Halifax and Stirling bombers—Mk I via main gear struts and Mk II via the nosewheel. The Horsa saw extensive use in major Allied airborne operations, including Sicily (1943), D-Day (1944), Arnhem, and the Rhine crossing, where over 400 were deployed. It was also used by U.S. forces. With a 26.82 m wingspan and max towing speed of 240 km/h, the Horsa was a vital tool in airborne warfare.
