Description
The A-7D Corsair II was a U.S. Air Force attack aircraft developed from the Navy’s A-7A, chosen for its effectiveness and low cost to replace the F-100. The A-7D featured major upgrades, including a more powerful Allison TF41-A-1 turbofan engine, an APU for independent power, and a single M61A-1 Vulcan cannon replacing dual 20mm guns. The refueling system was changed to a boom system, and carrier launch equipment was removed. It was the first U.S. military aircraft to use a Head-Up Display (HUD), and avionics and ECM capabilities were significantly enhanced. Later, it was equipped with the Pave Penny laser target detection system.
