Description
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia was the main RAF fighter during the early years of WWII, including the Battle of Britain. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin III engine, it reached speeds over 360 mph. The Mk.Ia featured eight .303 Browning machine guns and excellent maneuverability, thanks to its elliptical wing design. First entering service in 1938, it quickly became a symbol of British resistance. The Mk.Ia was well-matched against the German Bf 109E and played a crucial role in achieving air superiority over southern England in 1940.
