Description
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero emerged from Japan’s 12-Shi Experimental Fighter program, designed to succeed the Type 96 Carrier Fighter. First flown in April 1939, it featured extreme maneuverability, long range, and a 940 hp Nakajima Sakae 12 engine. Armed with two 20 mm cannons and two 7.7 mm machine guns, it combined speed, firepower, and endurance, allowing escorts of bombers deep into China. Early combat in 1940 demonstrated its dominance over Polikarpov I-15 and I-16 fighters. The Zero’s lightweight airframe, built from Extra-Super-Duralumin, and careful aerodynamic design made it one of the most effective naval fighters of WWII, achieving air superiority across the Pacific in its early campaigns.
