About this series
The MMP/Stratus series is an internationally acclaimed collection designed for aviation enthusiasts, historians, and scale modelers. Each volume is characterized by meticulous research and exceptional iconographic richness, often highlighting lesser-known air forces and aircraft.
By combining rare wartime photographs, precise technical analysis, and high-quality color profiles, this series provides an indispensable visual and historical resource for understanding the evolution of aerial combat and camouflage during the Second World War.
About this issue
During the desperate battle for Malta in 1941–1942, when German and Italian bombers relentlessly attacked the island, the arrival of Spitfire V fighters helped turn the tide in favour of the Allies. Flown from Royal Navy and US Navy carriers—and in some cases directly from Gibraltar—these aircraft significantly strengthened the island’s defences.
For many years, debate has persisted about the exact colour schemes carried by these aircraft. In this book, Brian Cauchi examines all available evidence, from photographs and firsthand accounts by survivors to surviving aircraft components, and presents his own interpretation of the many official and unofficial schemes worn by these hard-pressed warplanes.
The foreword is written by Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Robert “Bob” Middlemiss, a decorated veteran of the defence of Malta and Honorary Colonel of No. 427 Squadron RCAF. He served alongside notable figures such as “Laddie” Lucas and George “Screwball” Beurling, adding further historical depth to the work.
