ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Vonthof was educated in Ratingen graduated from Cologne
University with a degree in economics. In July 1963, he moved to England to join the editorial staff of the ABC World Airways Guide at a time when the introduction of electronic processing of airlines flight schedule data for publication was in its early stages. After advancing to editorship, he held several senior positions. As research Editor, he was involved with improving and perfecting the air guide's information dis play and to enhance its general usefulness, and also cooperated with the editorial build. up of several spin-off publications of the ABC
In January 1980, he joined the Planning and Research Division of Saudia Airlines in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, taking on the position of staff manager. Initially being involved with the introduction of new computer facilities in support of the Divisions on-going economic research as well as the activities of the schedule planning section, he subsequently worked as schedules manager and as a consultant. In the course of working for the airline, he became involved with the collection of information about the national carrier's history which resulted in the creation of a proper data base. This proved its worth for a publication that covered the 40-year history of Saudia and the 50-year book authored by Ron Davies
On his return from Saudi Arabia in 1993, at the end of his contract. Klaus Vomhof has concentrated on his research into the history of airlines world-wide and the build-up of a vast data base. Eventually, this activity came to focus on Europe's charter airlines whose head offices the author has repeatedly visited while researching this book.
In the course of his career, Klaus Voomhot has written various reports and articles covering aspects of the Soviet Union's and Saudi Arabia's air transport as well as airlines Haji operations in support of the annual Muslim pilgrimage. He has made contributions to several of the books authored by John Stroud and Ron Davies and to Market-research Reports of McDonnell Douglas.
