Description
Since its foundation in 1906 Rolls-Royce Limited has been synonymous with the very finest engineering excellence. To celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary, Michael Donne surveys the development of a world-famous company.
He describes the contrasting backgrounds and temperaments of Charles Stewart Rolls, a brilliant and adventurous aristocrat who sold cars to the rich and became a pioneer balloonist and aviator, and Henry Royce, the completely dedicated self-taught engineer. The company they established expanded dramatically in both world wars and inevitably the focus of attention shifted from cars to aeroplanes.
Until the collapse in 1971 it is a story of achievement and acquisition. After the bankruptcy, the new Rolls-Royce Limited has re-emerged as a determined power in aero-engine manufacture, and this survey shows how it is facing the challenges of the future.
The book is lavishly illustrated throughout the text, and includes some previously unpublished photographs from Rolls-Royce and other archives. LEADER OF THE SKIES is a fascinating portrait of the first seventy-five years, a chronicle of some trauma, and of dynamic success.
