Description
Robin J. Brooks served his National Service in the RAF in the trade of Operations Room Clerk. At present employed in the Office Equipment industry, he writes as a hobby and has articles published frequently in 'Bygone Kent', 'Kent Life' and various aviation journals.
He is treasurer of the Kent Aviation Historical Research Society, a body dedicated to recording the history of aviation in Kent.
From its 1931 origins at RAF Manston to the frontline of the Cold War, this is the definitive story of the “County of Kent” Squadron.
Follow these “weekend flyers” as they transform into a battle-hardened elite unit, scoring legendary victories at Dunkirk, hunting U-boats across the Mediterranean, and mastering the first jet fighters, including the Gloster Meteor and Hawker Hunter.
Robin J. Brooks captures the courage and camaraderie of a squadron that twice earned the Esher Trophy as the finest in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
A gripping tribute to the local heroes who took to the skies to defend Kent and the world.
This comprehensive history follows 500 Squadron from its formation through the Second World War, detailing operations in North Africa with Venturas and Hudsons, coastal patrols, mine spotting, bombing missions, and the squadron's vital role during the Battle of Britain. The book includes numerous photographs, personal accounts from squadron members, details of aircraft types flown, commanding officers, squadron bases, and the Old Comrades Association. It chronicles both the heroic achievements and tragic losses experienced by the squadron throughout its service.
