Description

A highly sought-after postwar edition of the legendary Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft, documenting the rapid transition from wartime aviation to the early jet age.

This substantial 1949–50 volume contains thousands of technical specifications, aircraft photographs, three-view drawings, airline references, civil aviation records, and international aircraft registries. It covers both military and civil aviation from around the world, including early jet bombers, transport aircraft, training aircraft, experimental prototypes, and postwar civil airliners.

Notable illustrated entries visible in this copy include:

  • Boeing XB-47 jet bomber
  • North American F-82 Twin Mustang
  • Saab-90 Scandia
  • Fiat G.59 trainer
  • Yakovlev aircraft
  • Handley Page Hastings
  • Canadian and Scandinavian civil aviation sections
  • Belgium / SABENA aviation records
  • Extensive postwar Italian aviation coverage

An essential historical aviation reference documenting the emergence of the jet era immediately after World War II.

Historical Importance

The 1949–50 edition is particularly desirable because it captures:

  • the immediate postwar aviation industry,
  • the birth of operational jet aviation,
  • reconstruction of European civil airlines,
  • early Cold War aircraft development,
  • and the transition from piston aircraft to turbine-powered aviation.

Collectors especially value these late-1940s editions for their detailed documentation of rare prototype aircraft and early jet programs.

À PROPOS DE CET AUTEUR
Leonard Bridgman

Leonard Bridgman ( 1895 - 1980 ) was a British artist and the Editor of Jane's All the World's Aircraft from 1941 to 1959.

His first assignment in aviation was in 1913 at the age of 18. One of his drawings was used to illustrate the Hendon Air Race program. As payment, he received a flight in a 70 - horsepower Maurice Farman biplane.

During the First World War, Leonard Bridgman served as an officer in the Honourable Artillery Company.

He is best remembered within the aviation industry as the journalist who joined C.G. Grey in 1923 on the staff of Jane's All the World's Aircraft after working on the staff at The Aeroplane. Leonard Bridgman also edited a book by the name of Esso Air World from 1939 to 1963. In 1956, in recognition of his contribution to technology, principally his work on Jane's All the World's Aircraft, he was awarded a Paul Tissandier Diploma by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. By that time, he had been associated with flying and publishing for 43 years.

Leonard Bridgman was also a talented artist and produced many aviation paintings, wash drawings and illustrations. He received commissions for numerous advertisements for British companies and illustrated Oliver Stewart's text for The Clouds Remember, one of the classics of aviation literature.
