THUNDERCLAP ON THE TIGRIS
7 June 1981...
In the afternoon light, several General Dynamics F-16 fighter-bombers, heavily laden with fuel and external weapons stores, take off from an airbase in the south of Israel. This in itself is not an unusual sight: the IAF is constantly flying training and combat missions, more than any air force in the world. This mission, however, is different.
Because, at the same time, from another airbase, a formation of McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagles is also taking off fully loaded. Because both formations now link up and disappear over the hills - to the east. Because these takeoffs, seemingly innocuous, are actually the first moment of one of the most daring and difficult air attack missions in history.
