Description
The Imperial War Museum ( I.W.M. ) was established by an Act of Parliament in 1920. Its purpose is to collect, preserve and display material and information connected with military operations in which Britain or the Commonwealth have been involved since 1914. I.W.M. Duxford is a branch of the Imperial War Museum, housing many of the larger exhibits in the Museum's collection, including aircraft, land vehicules and maritime craft. I.W.M. Duxford is also home to some of the Museum's large archive collection of photographs, film, books and documents. Visitors wishing to use these information sources should arrange access through Imperial War Museum London.
( ... ) I.W.M. Duxford is therefore an exciting mix of old and new. Many of the original buildings are preserved as they were during the early 1940's, but there are several striking more recent developments, such as the Land Warfare Hall, American Air Museum in Britain, and AirSpace : the story of British and Commonwealth aviation.
( ... ) The Imperial War Museum enjoys an international reputation for excellence, but we always strive to improve our facilities and levels of service. The Museum is constantly changing and responding to our visitors' needs and expectations. I hope you will want to share this exciting experience with us.
Sir Robert William Kenneth Crawford C.B.E.
Director - General ( 1995 - 2008 ), Imperial war Museum
