This book — half text, half illustrations — is the second of a trilogy chronicling the story of the RCAF fighter pilots who participated in the campaigns over the Western Desert between June 1940 and May 1943. This volume, Part One of the work, tells the story of the fighter boys who flew the Hawker Hurricane.
It covers the exploits and hardships of 146 pilots serving with eight RAF units: Nos. 6, 30, 33, 73, 74, 80, 123, and 127 Squadrons. Included in detail is the full story of W/C Vernon C. “Woody” Woodward, who alone claimed 20 of the 61 enemy aircraft destroyed by the Canadians in this campaign. The stories of the two other Canadian aces are also recounted: W/C R.T.P. “Bob” Davidson and F/Lt. James D. “Smudger” Smith.
The losses were severe: 48 aircraft and 33 pilots (seven of them POWs). More than half of these casualties were inflicted by the German Me 109 fighter aircraft, which was superior to the Hurricane in nearly every respect except manoeuvrability and sturdiness.
The book also includes the German and Italian perspectives on the campaign, as well as detailed lists of claims and casualties for each RAF unit, providing a comprehensive reference for this pivotal period in air combat history.
