This book is about an air force, its development and progress, its victories and defeats, successes and failures over fifty years of its existence, in continuously changing circumstances and fortunes which shaped not only the air force involved, but affected the world as a whole.
To do justice to this vast subject, each chapter of this work would warrant a volume several times the size of this study. Generalizations, simplification of some questions and problems and the omission of others of lesser consequence are therefore inevitable, and the book should be looked upon as an outline of Polish Air Force history rather than as a source of detailed and fully comprehensive information. The author felt that for the above reasons the inclusion of technical details and performance characteristics of Polish aircraft would be outside the scope of this study, especially as these can be found in others of his works, specifically devoted to Polish aircraft designs.
Despite these limitations, imposed mainly by the space available, the book represents the first work in world aviation literature to cover the history of the Polish Air Force from its very conception to the present day. It contains much material hitherto not available in the English language and a certain amount of new and original information which has never appeared in print before, together with a large proportion of completely new or little-known photographs.
