太平洋戦争当時、日本国内でもっとも有名な飛行機であったのは、「隼」の愛称で知られる陸軍の一式戦闘機であった。しかし、開発に難航した本機は昭和16年12月8日の開戦時にはわずか2個戦隊に行き渡るのみ。多くの実戦部隊に供給されるようになったのは昭和17年4月以降になってからであり、飛行第50戦隊もそのひとつであった。本書は菊池俊吉氏が装備改変を行なう飛行第50戦隊を訪れて撮影した一式戦闘機と、空中勤務者を中心とする戦隊員たちの雄姿を紹介しようというもの。氏のご家族が保管されている印画紙から新たに作られた印刷データはこれまで潰れがちになっていたディテールを鮮明に浮かび上がらせるものである。
