In 1908 klom Maurice Farman als eerste met een "vliegmachine" in het Belgische luchtruim. De voorbije honderd jaar later heeft de luchtvaart zich ontwikkeld tot een hoogtechnologische gebeuren. Deze hele bewogen evolutie is terug te vinden in het patrimonium dat België rijk is - de luchtvaart heeft in honderden steden en dorpen haar sporen nagelaten. Historische gebeurtenissen en vliegtuiers worden met standbeelden en steles vereeuwigd. Maar een belangrijk aantal vliegtuigloedsen verkwamen langsheen pistes waar al jaren geen vliegtuig meer landde. De voorbije eeuw stierven ook tienduizenden mensen ten gevolge van ongevallen en bombardementen. Monumenten en begraafplaatsen herinneren aan deze droevige gebeurtenissen : de ramp met de Zeppelin bij Gent, de crashes van Berg en Aarsele, en honderden gedenkplaten voor gevallen bemanningen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Dit boek van Frans Van Humbeek verhaalt op een bijzondere wijze de Belgische luchtvaartgeschiedenis. Aan de hand van verhelderende teksten en fraaie foto's is het een overzichtelijke historische en toeristische gids doorheen Vlaanderen, Brussel en Wallonië.

Né en 1958, Frans Van Humbeek est un journaliste aéronautique indépendant, historien et auteur belge, spécialisé dans l’histoire de l’aviation civile et du patrimoine aéronautique national.

Rédacteur en chef de la revue en ligne Hangar Flying, il consacre une grande partie de ses recherches à l’histoire des aérodromes belges, à la préservation des infrastructures historiques et à la valorisation des archives aéronautiques.

Étroitement lié à l’aérodrome de Grimbergen depuis de nombreuses années, il a notamment œuvré à la protection de ses hangars historiques. Il a également participé au développement d’une base documentaire consacrée au patrimoine aéronautique belge.

Auteur de nombreux ouvrages, il a notamment publié Brussels Airport (2002), Het verdronken vliegveld van Keerbergen (2003), Cockpits en piloten (2005) et Gids voor het Belgisch Luchtvaartpatrimonium (2007). Il a également contribué à l’ouvrage collectif 100 jaar luchtvaart in België (2002).

En 2024, il a cosigné avec Randy Buelens une étude historique approfondie consacrée à l’aérodrome de Grimbergen pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale : Vliegveld Grimbergen 1939–1946. Van aanleg tot White Tie.

Frans Van Humbeek, geboren in 1958, is een Belgische freelance luchtvaartjournalist, luchtvaarthistoricus en auteur, gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van de burgerluchtvaart en het Belgische luchtvaarterfgoed.

Als hoofdredacteur van het online luchtvaartmagazine Hangar Flying besteedt hij een groot deel van zijn onderzoek aan de geschiedenis van Belgische vliegvelden, het behoud van historische luchtvaartinfrastructuur en de ontsluiting van luchtvaartarchieven.

Hij is al vele jaren nauw verbonden met het vliegveld van Grimbergen en heeft zich onder meer ingezet voor de bescherming van de historische vliegtuigloodsen. Daarnaast werkte hij mee aan de ontwikkeling van een documentatiebestand over het Belgische luchtvaarterfgoed.

Born in 1958, Frans Van Humbeek is a Belgian freelance aviation journalist, historian and author specialising in the history of civil aviation and Belgium's aviation heritage.

As editor-in-chief of the online aviation magazine Hangar Flying, he devotes much of his research to the history of Belgian airfields, the preservation of historic aviation infrastructure and the documentation of aviation archives.

He has maintained close ties with Grimbergen airfield for many years and has actively campaigned for the protection of its historic aircraft hangars. He has also contributed to the development of a documentary database dedicated to Belgian aviation heritage.

The author of numerous aviation books, his publications include Brussels Airport (2002), Het verdronken vliegveld van Keerbergen (2003), Cockpits en piloten (2005) and Gids voor het Belgisch Luchtvaartpatrimonium (2007). Throughout the years, the author has gathered a vast and unique collection of aviation documents and photographs.

Today (2002) he is considered an authority on the rich history of Belgian aviation. In 1998 he published Het vliegveld van Grimbergen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, a book on the role of Grimbergen airfield in the Second World War. Frans is a member of the Belgian Aviation Press Club. He wrote valued contributions for several aviation magazines.

Frans Van Humbeek is hoofdredacteur van Hangar Flying (www.hangarflying.be). Hij is freelance luchtvaartjournalist en auteur van verschillende luchtvaartboeken. Frans probeert zowat alle facetten van de Belgische luchtvaart op te volgen, maar zijn passie gaat vooral uit naar het luchtvaarterfgoed en de geschiedenis van de Belgische vliegvelden.
