THE FORERUNNERS OF AIRSHIP TRAVEL
The idea of flying like the bird is as old as mankind. Tales and legends dealt with the theme even before christ was born, as the legend of Daedalus and Icarus proves.
At first various inventors tried to fly with machines that were heavier than air. Only toward the end of the 18th Century did the Montgolfier brothers in France get the idea of rising into the air with the help of a hot - air balloon. On July 5, 1783 the first ascension of such a balloon took place, and thus ’ lighter - than - air aviation ’ was born.
The Montgolfier brothers were laymen, inspired only by their idea.

Heinz Joachim Nowarra ( December 24th, 1912 - November 4th, 1992 ) was born in Berlin ( Germany ). He attended from 1919 to 1928 the Treitschke - school in Berlin - Wilmersdorf and completed afterwards an apprenticeship as an assistant. From 1930 to the end of 1933, he was unemployed and then worked as an office clerk and cashier until January 1936. Until 1940, he worked as a warehouse accountant and appointment processor at Siemens - Schuckertwerke.
From 1941 to mid - 1942, he worked for the Gesellschaft für Luftfahrtbedarf in Berlin in the spare parts management for the Bf 109 ( from January 1942 ), also for the Ju 88. From mid - 1942, he was assigned in the same function to the Junkers Flugzeug - und Motorenwerke, Leipzig shipyard, where he was later also responsible for the Ju 188.
After 1945, Heinz J. Nowarra exercised various professions in Berlin until he moved to Harreshausen ( Hesse, germany ) in June 1968. Until the end of 1977, he worked in the department ’ Market Research and Traffic Development ’ at Frankfurt Airport, where he was responsible for the internal information service and the archive. He retired in 1978.
Heinz J. Nowarra had made a name for himself as an author on aviation topics since 1958. He wrote his first major publication together with the American air force officer Kimbrough S. Brown for the British special publisher Harleyford about the German fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen under the title Von Richthofen and the Flying Circus. He published about 75 books and brochures plus about 34 articles in professional journals, about one third of which in English. Among them were editions of the Groschenheft series Fliegergeschichten and Der Landser. Heinz J. Nowarra also collected pictures and photographs on the subject of aviation.
After 1945, the secretary of the pilot veteran organization Alte Adler, Willi Hackenberger, and the German Air Force General Alfred Keller helped him most of all.
At the time of his death, Nowarra's collection is said to have comprised some 38,000 pictures. Heinz J. Nowarra died in Harreshausen, at the age of 79.
Here are some of his publications : Manual of German aircraft 1914 - 18 ( 1957 ), Im Rücken des Feindes ( Fliegergeschichten No. 174, 1960 ), Die grossen Dessauer. Ju G 38 - Ju 89 - Ju 90 - Ju 290 - Ju 390 ( 1983 ) and Grey Wolves of the Sea. German U - Boat Type VII ( 1992 ).
