Description
Here in over 350 pictures is the history of aeronautical testing, development, and flying at Farnborough. The early days with the Balloon Section of the Royal Engineers; S.F. Cody, the pioneer; the establishment of the Royal Aircraft Factory and immortal aircraft types such as the S.E.5a and F.E.2 in World War One; experiments and trials during the 1920s and 1930s; the frantic evaluation of vital aircraft types in the years leading up to World War Two; top-secret testing of the machines and equipment of the RAF and the Luftwaffe during 1939–45; the establishment of standard accident investigation procedures in the early jet era; harnessing technology at the birth of the missile age; highly complex work on current and future projects; and the fundamental changes after the end of the Cold War.
This book provides a comprehensive visual account of all these developments, highlighting the evolution of aircraft and aviation technology over nearly a century.
