Description

The author, Lieutenant-Commander J. G. S. (Joe) Norman, is a retired Royal Naval engineer officer with wide experience of many aircraft types in the postwar Fleet Air Arm. He flew the Firefly with 796 Squadron at Culdrose and with 728B Flight at Hal Far, where he was also in charge of the Station Flight. He was for some time a qualified Maintenance Test Pilot, and as such carried out the final test flight of a Firefly drone from Hal Far.

The Firefly must have been one of the Navy's most successful aircraft—albeit one having a few quirks, such as the gentle nodding to and fro of the control column of the Mk 5 on the downwind leg, with wheels and flaps down and, on some aircraft, the peculiarities of the decklanding ASI on the port side (intended to reduce boss-eyedness in pilots on finals), flickering wildly and reading differently from the master instrument in the cockpit. The Firefly sold well abroad, to the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Indian Navy, and to Thailand, Sweden, Australia and Canada (where some were built).
