Two Hundred Hours to Remember
The quiet of the evening was gently broken a few minutes ago by the sound of an approaching plane. A well-remembered sound in my ears, the low, even moan of a Rolls-Royce Merlin, and I went outside to look and listen. He was fairly high, six or eight thousand perhaps, and climbing rapidly through the darkness towards that crystal world of thin cold air where the Merlin did its finest work. I could see only a single dim light sliding swiftly through the stars until it lost its motion in the distant night and became one of them, but a vivid mental picture formed of blue flame leaping from short stacks and white-hot carbon sparks streaking past a small dark cockpit. Watching, listening and remembering as the sound grew faint, I would have swapped away all the evening's enchanting serenity on earth for another chance to sit in that cluttered little cockpit and live (...)
