Description
Wreathed in the security of the looming mountains, an exotic aircraft waits to take flight at a remote flight test facility. The jet has been shrouded in secrecy since its conception. The flight test crew waits patiently as the last checks are completed. The pilot pushes the throttles to maximum power and the strange looking aircraft shudders under the energy of the F404 turbofan engines. He releases the brakes and the diamond shape lurches forward. Contrasting other aircraft that have taken off from this remote test site, this one is slow and will eat up a large portion of runway. Nevertheless, it is the beginning of a revolution in flight.
Journalists have written scores of articles relating the development of stealth and its employment during combat, but what has not been told is the story of how a dedicated group accomplished one of the most difficult flight test programs in aviation history. This small cadre of devoted developers, testers, pilots, and maintainers built and flight-tested the first operational stealth aircraft in total secrecy and total isolation. This is their story.
