Intended as a companion volume to abc British Airports — now in its third air edition— abc European Airports has been compiled in a similar manner.
However, in some cases it has not been possible to extract the same degree of detail from the authorities for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is their difficulty in comprehending why anyone should be interested in airports. A few of those consulted obviously considered it unwise to disclose any information about the facilities in case it was useful to potential visitors. While many have done their best to discourage spectators because security is unfortunately a fact of life, it is interesting to note that some of the the busiest airports continue to offer first class facilities by maintaining strictly controlled checks at entrances. Ironically it would probably be far more difficult to smuggle an offensive weapon into these areas than through the security points intended to prevent incidents on the airside...
