Description
These are the high-spirited reminiscences of a brilliant pilot, recounting the planes he flew — and the crashes he survived — as a Naval airman during the First World War.
Having gained his Royal Aero Club pilot’s certificate in 1914 after only 2½ hours of flying, Flight Sub-Lieutenant Moore, RN, soon found himself piloting Sopwith Scouts on seaplane patrols. Stationed at the Isle of Grain, he also flew experimental aircraft, including a captured German Albatross, which fell victim to his exuberant appetite for aerobatic display.
The following year, he took part in the East African campaign, flying and maintaining a BE2c on improvised airfields in the unexplored bush — and remained undaunted despite further crashes.
Later, he was assigned yet another pioneering role, taking part in deck-landing experiments with the Navy’s first aircraft carrier, Furious.
Major Moore recounts this rich collection of adventures with gusto and good humour, capturing the hit-and-miss spirit of the early days of aviation.
