Description
This is the personal account of Wilhelm Johnen, a German night fighter pilot during the Second World War. The book chronicles his experiences flying night missions, engaging in aerial combat under the cover of darkness, and the challenges faced by German fighter pilots.
Johnen describes his first kill by night, his days at Schleswig, operational flights, triumphs and disasters, and his recovery from injuries. The narrative covers fighter control operations, encounters with Allied armadas, the defence of Berlin, air acrobat maneuvers, and experiences with jet fighters.
The book also includes accounts of missions against Allied bombers including Mitchells, his own command experiences, operations at Station Hayrick, encounters with Mosquito aircraft, and concludes with the last order. Translated by Mervyn Savill, this memoir provides a rare perspective from the German side of the night fighter war, detailing the technological developments, tactical innovations, and personal experiences of Luftwaffe night fighter crews during World War II.
