Description
In Part One of this book, I have discussed the DC-6 mainly in its three stages: in describing its development history, its heyday one would say the reign of the fast that it is still very much a feature of the world's airlines, and finally its 'second wind' as a reliable workhorse of many of today's recognized airline services. In this second part, we look in more detail at the aircraft itself.
First, however, let us look at the interim years - when, having passed from the hands of most first fleet operators, the DC-6 found itself in the hands of second-line carriers. It is what happened to the aircraft in those years that has governed largely the extent of its subsequent life to the present time. And again, we find ourselves in the realm of the remarkable.
At the time that any aircraft passes from the first clutch of owners to the second-hand market, its strengths and weaknesses have become pretty well established, and its future determined by the eagerness of prospective buyers. And the DC-6 had no trouble at all in finding new and impressed owners.
