Description
One of the most complex aircraft ever to enter service in the Luftwaffe and one of the most unusual. Reconnaissance aircraft or bomber? The Do 215 was simply the export version of the Do 17. A combination of Dornier's ingenuity and Daimler-Benz getting control of the Do 17 S and Ju 88 A-0 Strengthened for the Daimler Benz DB 601, for a marginal increase in bomb load. However, some deliveries were actually returned to Germany, with increased armament, additional protection and, in some cases, further modifications. On 1st. November 1940 the last Do 215 aircraft were converted to night fighter duties and for reconnaissance work. In total 78 aircraft were completed, operating in small numbers from 1939 to 1941, before being transferred to Reconnaissance and Night Fighter duties. One of these aircraft DO 215 B-5, had the distinction of being the first aircraft to be shot down by RAF night fighters over the UK. The Defiant aircraft shooting it down was flown by John Cunningham.
