Description
The Artwork
An exceptional signed and numbered aviation art print by Robert Taylor, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944.
The painting depicts General James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle, commander of the United States Eighth Air Force, flying a Lockheed P-38 Lightning over the Normandy invasion beaches during the opening hours of Operation Overlord.
Already famous for leading the daring 1942 air raid on Tokyo, Doolittle was determined to witness the Allied landings at first hand. Flying over the beachheads, he observed the unfolding operations before returning to deliver an eyewitness report to General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Robert Taylor captures this extraordinary episode in a sweeping aerial composition. The distinctive twin-boom Lightning dominates the foreground, its black-and-white invasion stripes standing out above the beaches, coastline and patchwork fields of Normandy. Smoke rises from the landing areas below, conveying the immense scale of the invasion.
Rich natural colours, atmospheric depth and meticulously rendered aircraft details make this a particularly impressive example of Taylor's historical aviation art.
