Description

The flying bomb was the first of Hitler’s Vergeltungswaffen, or reprisal weapons — a pilotless monoplane launched indiscriminately and designed to destroy and terrorize London. It was followed by the V2 rocket, a true missile that thrust upwards into space at supersonic speed.

Between June and September 1944, more than 9,000 V1s were launched at southern England, killing over 6,000 people and injuring 18,000. The rocket campaign began in early September and lasted until March 1945.

This book tells the story of those traumatic months through contemporary newspaper reports, official documents, photographs, and personal testimonies. It recreates the atmosphere of fear and courage that prevailed during what came to be known as the Battle of the Flying Bombs.
