Description
This exquisite 1:500 scale die-cast model represents a Douglas DC-8-55 in the classic SAS Scandinavian Airlines livery. Produced by Herpa as part of their exclusive Wings Club Limited Club Edition 2006 series (model number 505383), this collector's piece features the authentic white fuselage with blue 'SCANDINAVIAN' lettering along the side and the distinctive SAS tail logo. The model showcases exceptional attention to detail with accurately rendered passenger windows, four Pratt & Whitney JT3D turbofan engines, and precise landing gear. As a limited edition club release, this model represents a significant piece of aviation history and is highly sought after by serious collectors.
The Douglas DC-8-55 was a stretched intercontinental version of the DC-8 Series 50, featuring a lengthened fuselage that increased passenger capacity. This variant was powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT3D turbofan engines, offering improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise compared to earlier turbojet models. The real aircraft measured 45.87 meters in length with a wingspan of 43.41 meters and a height of 12.91 meters, making it one of the largest commercial jets of its era. SAS Scandinavian Airlines operated the DC-8-55 extensively on transatlantic and long-haul routes during the 1960s and 1970s, representing a golden age of jet travel in Scandinavia.
🇸🇪 About the Airline
SAS Scandinavian Airlines is the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, founded in 1946 through a consortium of the three countries' national airlines. As one of Europe's oldest airlines still in operation, SAS has been a pioneer in transatlantic aviation and polar route operations. The airline's distinctive livery and significant role in Nordic aviation history make their vintage aircraft highly desirable among die-cast collectors.
