Description
This Schabak die-cast model represents an Interflug Ilyushin IL-62 in the airline's classic livery featuring red cheatline and titles on a white fuselage. The model accurately captures the distinctive four-engine rear-mounted configuration and T-tail design that made the IL-62 instantly recognizable. Manufactured in Germany with attention to detail, this 1:600 scale piece features rolling landing gear and showcases the clean lines of this Soviet-era long-range jetliner. The model bears article number 952/110 and comes in Schabak's characteristic packaging with the DDR emblem visible on the box.
The Ilyushin IL-62 was the Soviet Union's first long-range jet airliner, designed to compete with Western aircraft like the VC10 and DC-8. First flown in 1963, it featured four Kuznetsov NK-8 turbofan engines mounted in pairs on the rear fuselage, allowing for a clean wing design. The aircraft measures 53.12 m (174 ft 3 in) in length with a wingspan of 43.20 m (141 ft 9 in) and a height of 12.35 m (40 ft 6 in). At 1:600 scale, this model measures approximately 8.9 cm in length with a wingspan of about 7.2 cm. The IL-62 served as the flagship aircraft for many Eastern Bloc airlines and remained in service for decades, particularly with Interflug, the state airline of East Germany.
🇩🇪 About the Airline
Interflug was the state airline of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1963 to 1991. Operating primarily Soviet-built aircraft including the IL-62, Tu-134, and later the Il-18, Interflug connected East Berlin to destinations across Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Cuba. Following German reunification in 1990, the airline ceased operations in 1991, making models in its livery particularly sought after by collectors of Cold War-era aviation memorabilia.
