Description
This Herpa miniature model represents an Ilyushin IL-62 in the classic livery of Interflug, the former flag carrier of the German Democratic Republic. The model features the distinctive red and white color scheme with "INTERFLUG" titles prominently displayed along the fuselage. Manufactured by Herpa in 1:500 scale, this die-cast replica captures the elegant lines of the Soviet-designed long-range airliner with remarkable detail, including accurate engine nacelles, tail configuration, and registration markings DDR-SEP. The model comes in Herpa's signature presentation box with photographic imagery of the actual aircraft. The Ilyushin IL-62 was the Soviet Union's first long-range jet airliner, designed to compete with Western aircraft like the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. First flown in 1963, the IL-62 featured four rear-mounted engines and a distinctive T-tail configuration. It served as the backbone of Interflug's long-haul fleet, connecting East Berlin with destinations across Europe, Asia, and Africa during the Cold War era. The aircraft could carry up to 186 passengers and had a range of approximately 10,000 kilometers. The IL-62 remained in service with various airlines until the early 2000s, making it one of the longest-serving Soviet jet airliners.
🇩🇪 About the Airline
Interflug was the state airline of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1963 to 1991. Operating from East Berlin's Schönefeld Airport, it served as the GDR's international flag carrier, connecting the socialist state with destinations worldwide. Following German reunification in 1990, Interflug ceased operations in 1991, with its routes and some aircraft absorbed by Lufthansa and other carriers.
