The Ilyushin IL-62 was the Soviet Union's first long-range jet airliner, designed to compete with Western aircraft like the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. CSA Czechoslovak Airlines operated the IL-62 extensively on long-haul routes throughout Europe, Asia, and beyond during the Cold War era and into the 1990s. CSA Czechoslovak Airlines (České aerolinie) was founded in 1923, making it one of the world's oldest airlines. During the communist era, CSA operated as the flag carrier of Czechoslovakia, flying primarily Soviet-built aircraft including the IL-62. After the Velvet Revolution and the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, CSA became the national airline of the Czech Republic and gradually modernized its fleet with Western aircraft.
