Description
This exceptional 1:200 scale die-cast model represents the Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair operated by British Air Ferries, registration G-ASDC. Manufactured by Limited Edition with meticulous attention to detail, this model faithfully reproduces the distinctive bulbous nose and unique configuration that made the Carvair instantly recognizable. The authentic BAF livery features striking blue and yellow stripes on the tail and fuselage, with 'CARGO' markings on the forward fuselage. The model showcases excellent panel line definition, detailed landing gear, and accurate proportions that capture the unusual appearance of this historic aircraft.
The Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair was a remarkable conversion of the Douglas DC-4 aircraft, specifically designed to carry cars and passengers across the English Channel. Its most distinctive feature was the enlarged nose section that housed a hydraulically-operated door, allowing vehicles to be driven directly into the cargo hold. British Air Ferries operated several Carvairs on routes between the UK and continental Europe during the 1960s and 1970s, providing an innovative air ferry service before the Channel Tunnel era. The aircraft could typically carry five cars and 25 passengers, making it a unique solution for cross-channel transport. This model measures approximately 22.5 cm in length with a wingspan of approximately 24 cm.
