The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a wide-body trijet airliner that entered service in 1990 as an advanced derivative of the DC-10. With a length of 200 ft 9 in (61.2 m), wingspan of 169 ft 6 in (51.7 m), and height of 57 ft 9 in (17.6 m), the MD-11 offered improved fuel efficiency and extended range up to 7,400 miles. American Airlines operated the MD-11 with typical mixed-class seating for 323 passengers or high-density configurations for up to 410 passengers. The aircraft featured upgraded engines, winglets, and an advanced glass cockpit, cruising at 588 mph and serving long-haul international routes before being retired from American's passenger fleet in the early 2000s.
