Description
The history of powered flight - as distinct from gliding or ballooning - spans only some eighty years. Yet in that short space of time the concept has developed dramatically - from worm-braced biplanes, staggering into the air at 40 mph, to supersonic jets capable of over 1500 mph. Technical innovation has been matched on the human side by extraordinary feats of bravery and endurance, resulting in both brilliant and tragic episodes. This record of aviation has naturally produced a multitude of facts, figures and stories about both machines and the people who flew and flew in them. The Dictionary of Aviation provides an invaluable guide to this wealth of history, presenting all the major events, personalities and developments in a highly readable and accessible form.
The book divides its material into two main categories: the people and the machines and the aircraft - and within each of these sections the topics are arranged alphabetically. The first section describes the careers of all the great men - and women - of aviation history, comprising the famous pioneers, pilots and other aviation personalities from George Cayley to the earliest aviators to the test pilots who are today's heroes of today. The second section covers all the major battles and campaigns in the air, from the first recorded flight to the war in Libya in 1981 and the Falklands in 1982. The final section provides descriptions of the aircraft themselves, arranged in alphabetical order by manufacturer, from Avro and Boeing to Vickers and Westland.
