Description
This year the Royal Air Force celebrates its Diamond Jubilee. Sixty years ago, on 1 April 1918, in the closing months of World War I, the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were amalgamated to form one single Service dedicated to the prosecution of war in the air. Thus the first independent Air Force in the world was born.
We can be grateful that the original architects of the Royal Air Force, Winston Churchill and more particularly Air Marshal Trenchard, had the vision to recognise the need for an independent Air Force and the courage and tenacity to overcome the initial criticism of the organisation which has withstood the test of time, the ravages of war and several radical changes in Defence Policy. The organisation of the Royal Air Force today bears a remarkable resemblance to Trenchard's original blue print.
