Description
About this issue
This second volume completes the story of the little-known air war over North Africa between Italian and Commonwealth forces. It covers the period from December 1940 to February 1941, including Operation Compass. Richly illustrated with many rare photographs, maps, and colour profiles, this book, together with Volume 1, pays tribute to those who fought in this often overlooked yet significant campaign.
The air war in North Africa has long been somewhat neglected, with only a limited number of books published in recent decades. This is likely due to two main factors: a relative lack of interest in this part of history in Italy, and incomplete British archival records for this theatre of operations. As a result, many existing works are now outdated and in need of revision.
Two authors, well known for their respective areas of expertise—H. Gustavsson for biplane fighters and L. Slongo for the Italian air force—have undertaken to revisit and update this chapter of the air war in North Africa, beginning with the first clashes of 1940 and 1941.
Following an introduction that sets out the situation in June 1940, detailing British, French, and Italian forces, the authors recount the air war day by day from 10 June to 30 November 1940. Personal recollections and combat reports are included to enrich the narrative, supported by a strong selection of photographs and several pages of colour profiles, resulting in a highly engaging and informative work.
Well documented and bringing to light new details about a conflict initially fought with limited resources, this book will undoubtedly interest historians and aviation enthusiasts alike, and can be recommended without hesitation.
