Description
About this issue
The campaign in North Africa in 1940, fought between Italian and Commonwealth forces, has been relatively little studied or written about. This book, the first of two volumes, describes the air war from June to November 1940, along with the associated ground and naval campaigns.
For the British and Allied forces, this was a relatively minor campaign, involving mostly aircraft types considered obsolete in other theatres. It also marked the last aerial battlefield where biplane fighters faced each other. Nevertheless, on both the Italian and British sides, leading WW2 aces made their mark, notably Teresio Martinoli and Thomas “Pat” Pattle.
Richly illustrated with many rare photographs, as well as maps and colour profiles, this book stands as a tribute to those who fought in a largely forgotten yet significant campaign. Volume 2, Desert Prelude – Operation Compass, will complete the story.
