L'opération " Overlord " représente un tournant capital de l'histoire de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Le débarquement en Normandie continue, 55 ans après son exécution, d'intéresser de nombreux historiens du fait de l'importance stratégique de cette opération. Aucun débarquement de cette envergure n'avait été tenté auparavant. Toutes les composantes des armées alliées prirent part à cette opération qui fut le point de départ de la libération de notre pays et de tout l'Europe. 

Oubliés par l'Histoire, les pilotes de planeurs américains jouèrent un rôle non négligeable dans la réussite de l'opération Neptune, phase d'assaut d'Overlord. Pas toujours considérés comme de vrais pilotes, rien ne fut écrit sur leur parcours militaire. De leur incorporation aux Etats-Unis jusqu'aux combats de Normandie, ce livre retrace, au travers de documents et de témoignages, l'engagement de ces hommes qui utilisèrent le planeur comme moyen militaire de transport de troupes sur les champs de batailles. 

Operation Overlord was a watershed in the history of World War Two. 55 years on, owing to their strategic importance, the Normandy landings continue to atract numerous historians. No landing had ever been attempted on such a scale before. Every component of the Allied armies took part in this operation, which was the springboard for the liberation of France and the rest of Europe. 

Neglected by historians, the American glider pilots played a significant role in the overall success of Operation Neptune, the assault phase of Overlord. They were not always regarded as being proper pilots, and nothing was written about their military career. From being called up in the United States to the fighting in Normandy, this book calls upon documents and eyewithness accounts to recount the commitment of these men who used the glider as a military vehicle to transport troops onto the field of battle.
