Description
Claude Grahame - White could be regarded as Britain's, if not the world's, foremost all - round aeronaut. He was the only man ever to hold the three most coveted gold medals for flying : from the Royal Aero Club, the Aero Club de France, and the Aero Club of America. He taught himself to fly, and soloed without a single lesson, becoming the first Briton to hold an internationally recognized pilot's certificate. He opened the first British school of flying, and thereby became the pioneer instructor. Single - handed he developed ’ London Aerodrome ’ at Hendon.
In this full biography, the author tells of his exploits - how Grahame - White organized Britain's first air mail service; built and operated the world's first commercial air - liner; exhibited Britain's first military aircraft, and flew in the first great air raid of the 1914 - 18 War. At 37 he was a Commander in the Royal Naval Air Service, and Chairman of an important aircraft company. He became a national hero overnight after his historic London - to - Manchester air race against Paulhan in 1910, although he lost it. He also crossed the ocean and beat the Yankees at everything aeronautical in the famous Boston - Harvard Air Meeting. Despite Claude Grahame - White's unique contribution to world aviation he was never honoured, and no doubt his law - suit against the Government had much to do with this - particularly as he won it. His successful battle against ’ The Establishment ’ makes an inspiring story. ( ... )
