The author
Born in griffin, Georgia, in the middle of the Great Depression, Robert T. Smith built his first model airplane at the age of eight, and slipped away from home during his teens for secret flying sessions at the local airport. Shortly there after, he entered the United States Air Forces, first serving as an airplane mechanic, later as pilot on the Boeing B-47 « Strato-Jet ».
After leaving the Air force, he taught Air force students at Bartow Air Force Base, Florida, until that base closed down late in 1960. This was followed by quick tour with the Lockheed-Georgia Company with a « desk job » in Lock-heed's Flight Test Analysus Department. Bob's first interest in writing started back in high school days. Later he wrote a weekly column in an Air Force Base newspaper. This led to an invitation to do an article for Aerospace Safety, and since then Bob has concentrated on articles for aviation magazines, and on aviation books. Sandwiched somewhere between selling life insurance, and writing, Bob maintains an interest in flying by freelance flight instructing and Air Force Reserve flying.
