Description
The aircraft carrier is nowadays the most obvious, most expensive and most politically controversial instrument of naval power. Since World War II, carrier development has been so hectic that only one country, the United States, has been able to withstand the technological and financial pressure of operating a sizeable carrier fleet.
But this has not always been so, and Carrier Air Power relates the whole history of ship-based aircraft and their employment. It is a penetrating analysis of the very special requirements of carrier design and the operational roles both of the ships and of their aircraft. It details the complex contemporary carrier functions — strike, anti-submarine warfare and fleet air defense — and describes how and why these functions evolved.
US, British, Japanese and French doctrine is discussed, and the author also deals with the carrier arms of the smaller navies, together with the ill-fated German and Italian designs. The current debate surrounding the US 'super-carrier' is highlighted and a glimpse into the future, with V/STOL aircraft and all that they imply, is provided.
