Description
Bulgaria was arguably the historically most underrated Axis ally that actually fought the Allies during World War II. It did face its fair share of wartime hardships, but not to the extent some other Eastern European countries had to endure. Owing to the personal friendship of Tsar Boris III with Adolf Hitler, the Germans were willing to spare Bulgaria from the worst. An important role in this was played by the Royal Bulgarian Air Force, with its prime mission being the defense of Sofia and other strategic targets within the Kingdom.
The RBAF proved to be a formidable opponent, and on several occasions it was mentioned by the cognizant Allied intelligence, namely by the US intelligence summaries, as the most effective fighter opponent the Allies had to face in the Balkans in 1943 and 1944.
This two-volume book describes and illustrates all the fighter and fighter trainer aircraft used by the Bulgarian Air Force from the end of WWI to the beginning of the Cold War. These aircraft were sourced from Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland before, during, and shortly after WWII. These are described in great detail, including their camouflage, markings and all the known serial numbers. Some never-before-published photographs and many unique color profiles illustrate the fascinating story of the exotic Bulgarian fighter types.
