Description
Innovation and technical excellence have always been the hallmark of British aircraft manufacture, and air travel throughout the world owes a great deal to the safety and reliability of British aircraft, engines and associated air and ground-based equipment. Most of the 75-year history of British aircraft design and construction is embodied in British Aerospace, which is an amalgamation of most of the famous concerns of the past, although the three major companies of Shorts, Rolls-Royce and Westland have survived under their own names. Others, like Britten-Norman and Edgley Aircraft, are of more recent origin, but these too have deservedly added their names to the illustrious line of superior British manufacturers — and Airship Industries is certainly a name for the future.
In addition to the industrial companies that have produced such superb aircraft as Concorde, BAe146, Shorts 330, Islander and Optica are the operators. British Airways — 'the world's favourite airline' — is the country's national flag-carrier, complemented by the independent airlines and the entrepreneurial air taxi and helicopter operators. Providing a wide variety of services, all nevertheless operate to the highest standards from the large number of thriving British airports.
Overseeing the British civil aviation scene is the Civil Aviation Authority, whose responsibilities include air traffic control, economic regulation, licensing, air safety, consumer interests, environmental considerations, international relations and scientific research.
Günter Endres surveys these manufacturers, aircraft operators, airports and other organisations, and more. His comprehensive text is accompanied by numerous illustrations, to give the reader an attractive reference to British civil aviation.
