Description
Britain has not always been quick to exploit the excellence of her inventors, so it was to the great credit of the Air Staff of the mid-1930s that they gave the go-ahead for some outstanding British engineers and companies to develop enclosed, power-operated gun turrets to arm the new generation of bomber aircraft then being planned.
That decision gave Britain a world lead in the defence of bomber aircraft, which would only be followed by American and German aircraft manufacturers after war broke out in 1939. The resultant often ingenious designs were to arm RAF Bomber Command and RAF Coastal Command aircraft throughout the Second World War and, in some cases, beyond.
This book - the culmination of the author's 25-year study of the subject - records the details of every gun turret used by the RAF, from the very earliest attempts to provide air gunners with some means of protection from the elements and powered assistance for their weapons, via the development and mass production of wartime turrets, through to today's Lucas helicopter turret. Including American turrets fitted to US aircraft used by the RAF, this well illustrated volume is destined to become the essential 'benchmark' reference work.
