Description

Boulton & Paul (later Boulton Paul) entered the aircraft industry during the First World War by building F.E.2 pusher biplanes and Sopwith Camel and Snipe single-seat fighters, and then went on to make major contributions to aeronautical development particularly in the field of powered gun turret design.

This book describes these contributions in great detail and emphasises Boulton Paul's pioneering work on metal structures, including the provision of the framework of the large rigid airship R101. Three-quarters of the Boulton Paul production was made up of various models of the Defiant turret fighter and it was in the field of powered gun turret design that Boulton Paul excelled.

The company also specialised in the design of agile high performance twin-engined bombers and the Sidestrand and Overstrand are the best- known. Biplanes for Imperial Airways, the Balliol trainer and, later, delta-winged research aeroplanes were built. Projects amounted to more than 140.

Apart from aircraft and gun turrets much experimental work was done on powered controls and the present Dowty Boulton Paul continues this work.
