Description
Bogeys! Eleven O'Clock High is a striking aviation artwork by Robert Taylor commemorating Operation Vengeance, one of the most remarkable aerial interception missions of the Second World War.
On 18 April 1943, American P-38 Lightning fighters intercepted the aircraft carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto near Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. Following the interception of Japanese communications, Major John W. Mitchell led the carefully planned long-range mission from Guadalcanal.
Robert Taylor captures the P-38 Lightnings flying low over the Pacific, their distinctive twin-boom silhouettes standing out against brilliant blue waters and a distant tropical coastline. The composition conveys both the immense distance travelled and the precision required to execute this historic operation.
