Description
When it was originally published to critical acclaim in 1973, Battle over the Reich broke new ground by describing the air battles over Germany from the perspectives of combatants on both sides. The work also stood out for its detailed assessment of the equipment and fighting tactics employed throughout the campaign. Almost immediately, the book established itself as one of the most important studies of the aerial war over Europe.
Since the publication of the first edition, a considerable amount of new information has emerged on this aspect of the conflict. More than thirty years later, this allowed the creation of a greatly expanded edition in two volumes, enriched with additional personal accounts from Allied and German aircrews, as well as enhanced graphics and illustrations.
The work recounts the story of the strategic Allied air offensive over Germany and analyses the campaign from the viewpoints of the RAF, the USAAF, and the Luftwaffe. It provides an in-depth examination of both daylight and night operations, together with the aircraft, weapons, radar systems, and ground defences used during the conflict.
The first volume focuses on the early phase of the offensive, including the initial British bombing raids carried out by aircraft such as the Vickers Wellington, the Handley Page Halifax, the Handley Page Hampden, the Short Stirling, and the Avro Manchester of Bomber Command. It also explores the development of sophisticated German night-fighter, flak, and radar defence systems, as well as the entry of the USAAF into the daylight bombing campaign.
Among the notable episodes covered is the famous RAF Avro Lancaster raid against the German dams in May 1943.
The book further highlights the rapid evolution of military radio and radar technology during the Second World War, along with the countermeasures developed to defeat them. The result was an intense and continuous technological struggle that neither side could afford to lose — a battle marked by the bravery, sacrifice, and skill of those who fought in it, regardless of nationality.
